The Red Keep is the castle located within King's Landing that contains the Iron Throne, and serves as the home to the Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and the rest of the royal family. It dominates the city's skyline, and serves as the primary fortress and redoubt of the king and the city. When Aegon the Conqueror first arrived in Westeros, he built the Aegonfort on Aegon's Hill. After the completion of his campaign, he ordered the construction of a permanent royal castle where the Aegonfort once stood. The construction was completed during the reign of his successor, Maegor the Cruel, who then had all the stonemasons involved in its development executed so that its many secrets would would only to be known to him.
