- "All I did, I did for House Lannister! Always! Your lord father, ask him! I've always been his servant, since the days of the Mad King!"
- ―Pycelle justifying himself to Tyrion Lannister.
Grand Maester Pycelle was the grand maester of multiple kings, starting with Aegon V Targaryen. He served for forty years, serving Aegon V, Jaehaerys II, Aerys II, Robert I, Joffrey I and finally Tommen I. He was pardoned by King Robert following Robert's Rebellion, and kept serving as grand maester for another three kings. Despite his oath of loyalty to the realm, he had always kept faith with House Lannister, and is responsible for having convinced Aerys II to allow Tywin into the city, and later helped Cersei by betraying Eddard Stark. In the show, Pycelle met his end as part of Cersei's plan to seize power, with Qyburn using his little birds to stab Pycelle to death. In the books, Varys had his little birds murder Pycelle as part of his plan to stop Ser Kevan from bringing peace to the realm.
