The Free City of Pentos, simply known as Pentos, is a city-state on the western coast of Essos, and one of the nine Free Cities. Originating as a colony of the Valyrian Freehold, it gained its independence after the fall of Valyria and during the Century of Blood. The city-state is led by a prince chosen by the magisters from one of the many noble families, and its territory expands across Andalos, stretching from the Velvet Hills to the Little Rhoyne to the Narrow Sea. They pay tribute to the Dothraki in return for not being attacked, and conduct trade with the Seven Kingdoms: as a result, they are a wealthy nation, but certainly not the strongest.
