- "Are you a sworn brother of the Night's Watch...or only a bastard boy who wants to play at war?"
- ―Jeor Mormont to Jon Snow.
Lord Commander Jeor Mormont was the head of House Mormont, Lord of Bear Island and, late in his life, the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Prior to Robert's Rebellion, Jeor abdicated his seat as Lord of Bear Island and joined the Night's Watch, leaving his son and heir, Ser Jorah, as lord. He rose rapidly through the ranks, eventually becoming Lord Commander. After almost being killed by a wight in 299 AC, Jeor led the majority of Castle Black's forces beyond the Wall to combat the wildlings and Others. Establishing his force at the Fist of the First Men, while performing reconnaissance on Mance's army, a massive White Walker army assaults their position, and Jeor Mormont takes his remaining men and retreats back to the Wall, hoping to warn them. Stopping by Craster's Keep, a mutiny in the Night's Watch breaks out after Karl (Dirk in the books) kills Craster. In the fighting, Jeor is betrayed and murdered by Rast.
