- "We are ironborn. We're not subjects, we're not slaves. We do not plow the field or toil in the mine. We take what is ours."
- ―Balon Greyjoy.
The Greyjoy Rebellion, also known as Greyjoy's Rebellion, was a rebellion against the Iron Throne instigated and spearheaded by the eponymous House Greyjoy. An attempt at secession, Balon Greyjoy established the Second Kingdom of the Iron Islands, doing so on the hope that Robert's forces were still recovering from Robert's Rebellion nine years prior, and were of dubious loyalty. The war started with the burning of the Lannister fleet at Lannisport, which gave the Iron Fleet brief naval supremacy. Balon underestimated the solidarity of the post-Targaryen Westerosi climate however, and soon found himself at war with every major house in the kingdoms. The war was brief, ending in Greyjoy's defeat, the death of two of Balon's three sons, the taking of his last son as a ward, and the continuation of Greyjoy rule over the Iron Islands.
