- "The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword."
- ―Ned Stark.
Lord Eddard Stark, also known by his nickname Ned Stark, was the head of House Stark, Lord of Winterfell, Warden of the North, Lord Paramount of the North and, late in his life, the Hand of the King. He fought in Robert's Rebellion after his father and brother were executed by Aerys II Targaryen, and was a close friend of Robert Baratheon, who later became king following his victory, and Eddard became Warden of the North and Lord of Winterfell. He followed Robert to war once again a few years later, this time to crush a Greyjoy rebellion. Seventeen years after Robert's Rebellion, Ned Stark was summoned to King's Landing to become the King's Hand following the mysterious death of Jon Arryn. His subsequent investigations, including Robert's death and Eddard's attempts to stall Joffrey's ascent to the throne, resulted in his own execution, and another civil war.
