- "I've burned away my years fighting for terrible kings...a man of honor keeps his vows - even if he's serving a drunk or a lunatic. Just once in my life, before it's over, I want to know what it's like to serve with pride, to fight for someone I believe in."
- ―Barristan to Ser Jorah Mormont.
Ser Barristan Selmy, commonly titled as Barristan the Bold, is a knight and member of House Selmy, the former head of House Selmy and was Lord Commander of the Kingsguard during the reign of Robert I Baratheon. Ser Barristan fought in many wars, including the War of the Ninepenny Kings, and later became Kingsguard to Jaehaerys II Targaryen, and then Aerys II Targaryen, where he single-handedly saved him during the Defiance of Duskendale. He was injured during the Battle of the Trident, but was later pardoned by King Robert, who made him Lord Commander. Ser Barristan was dismissed from the Kingsguard by King Joffrey, where he then fled across the Narrow Sea. He pledged his service to Daenerys Targaryen, becoming a member of her Queensguard. In the books, following Daenerys' disappearance, he has assumed command of her remaining forces and is preparing to engage the slaver armies in battle. In the show, he was killed saving Grey Worm from a Harpy ambush.
